Adding upvotes to a new comment on an old thread
When you post a new comment on an old Reddit thread, timing matters more than speed. To avoid Reddit’s sitewide spam filters and keep your comment safe, upvotes should be sent after the comment has aged.
Note: If your comment is on a new thread, different guidelines apply. This article is specifically for old threads.
Why Timing Matters
Reddit is highly suspicious of new comments on old threads that suddenly receive engagement. This is one of the most common triggers for comment removals.
Based on extensive real-world testing, we’ve found that once a comment is older than ~10 days, Reddit becomes significantly more lenient with engagement.
Safe Upvote Strategy (Old Threads)
- Wait at least 10–14 days after the comment is posted
- After this aging period, upvotes can be sent in one go
- Sending upvotes too early has a high risk of being flagged or removed
Reddit rewards patience. Letting the comment “settle” first dramatically increases its survival rate.
Best Practice Summary
- ✅ Comment ages 10+ days
- ✅ Send upvotes after the waiting period
- ❌ Avoid early upvotes on old threads
- ❌ Don’t rush engagement — this is where most removals happen
Tip: The older the comment age, the better success and stick rate you'll have. These best practices come from extensive testing as there are no official rules on timing, but this method keeps your comments safe.
For old threads, when you send upvotes matters more than how many. Waiting 10–14 days before adding engagement has proven to be the most reliable way to rank comments safely.
